The development of ultra-sensitive biological and chemical sensors is one of the grand scientific, engineering, and educational challenges of the 21st century.

The Utah Center for NanoBioSensors is addressing this challenge by developing sensor platforms that exploit breakthroughs in nanomaterials, miniaturization, sample collection, preparation strategies, and signal detection.This strategy focuses on the development of advanced systems for the rapid, ultra-sensitive detection of pathogens responsible for disease as well as those central to homeland security and the environment.

The next generation biosensor platforms require significant improvements in sensitivity and specificity in order to meet the needs in a variety of fields including in vitro medical diagnostics, pharmaceutical discovery and pathogen detection.

Nanobiosensors exploit fundamental differences in material characteristics realized at nanometric dimensions to detect specific molecular interactions. Our devices have progressed to a point where it is possible to determine in which cases their inherent advantages over traditional techniques (such as nucleic acid microarrays) compensate for the added complexity and cost involved in constructing and assembling them.
