The National Science Foundation's flagship interdisciplinary training program, Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT), is designed to meet the challenges of educating Ph.D. science and engineering students with the interdisciplinary background and the technical, professional, and personal skills needed for the career demands of the future. The program is intended to catalyze a cultural change in graduate education by establishing innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. The University of Utah's newly organized IGERT: Nanobiosensors, Nanomaterials, and Microfluidics program will establish collaborative ventures in ultra-high sensitivity detection, molecular recognition, surface characterization, interfacial reactivity, micro- and nano-fabrication, and microfluidics that will support the broad topic of the development of biological and chemical sensors in advanced systems for the rapid, ultra-sensitive detection of pathogens responsible for disease, food safety, security, and the environment.
The next generation of research leaders in the science and engineering disciplines will require training that breaks down many of the longstanding boundaries in several traditional science and engineering fields. The research and educational experiences at the University of Utah will be augmented with internships in commercial, government, and educational settings. In addition to the intense technical education opportunities for trainees, they will receive instruction in ethics, creativity, communication, teamwork, and entrepreneurship, all of which play an increasingly vital role in the rapidly evolving scientific and business environments.
Six new trainees will be accepted into the exciting educational training program each year. The IGERT program is a non-degree granting program. Students will apply to, and receive their degrees, from their home departments. Students seeking Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacy, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering are eligible to apply.
